Introduction of MDI support system

MDI (Mazda Digital Innovation), aiming to innovate the vehicle development process, exploits and deploys new Technologies in the areas of 'Business Process', 'Methodology' and 'Enablers'. 'MDI Support Systems' described in this article is the major enabler for the new business process, and its objective is to contribute to Digital Innovation for our products and components, manufacturing facilities and its processes, and communication and management, by utilizing the latest information technology. In order to provide broad, state-of-the-art functionalities in a very short period at an optimized life cycle cost of system, we decided to utilize the world-class commercial systems. To achieve this goal, we have selected SDRC and Tecnomatix as partners to implement CAD/CAM/CAEIPIM systems, using their systems as a core 1-DEAS as a feature-based Solid Modeler, ROBCAD as a CAPE support tool and Metaphase for information sharing. As opposed to the in-house 'dedicated system' used before MDI, MDI Support System emphasizes the openness and scalability, and globally-data-compatible environment. As it is most important to deploy the system into a real business environment, MDI Support Center was established including the outside experts, to provide the support for deployment, training and system management. Throughout Phases 1 & 2 (1996-1999), 50% of the legacy systems were replaced, along with deploying system to 120 Suppliers. In this article, principles of MDI Support System, major features, and deployment are introduced.
