Although the Quinta Escuadrilla (Fifth Squadron) owns and operates the oldest airframes in the Spanish Naval Aviation fleet, the Sea King unit has assembled unrivalled reputation and experience. THE FIFTH SQUADRON was officially established on February 19, 1966, beginning its career with the arrival of Spain's first Sikorsky SH-3D Sea King anti-submarine warfare helicopter. The first aircraft were transferred to the country aboard the USS Independence (CVA 62) and arrived at Naval Station Rota on June 29 of the same year.
