Comparison of natural insecticides for controlling adults of Otiorrhynchus spp. on ruscus.

Two seperate field trials were carried out in Italian Riviera to test four natural compounds against adults of Otiorrhynchus sulcatus Fabr. and Otiorrhynchus lugens Germ, on ruscus (Danae racemosa). The insecticides compared were rotenone, a neem oil, a natural compound containing pyrethrum, piperonyl butoxide and essential oils, a macerate of Oleander leaves and pyrimiphos-methyl. The products were sprayed weekly, from May to July. Only retenone treatments (150 g/100 l of powder obtained from plants of genus Lonchocarpus) provided a satisfactory reduction of the incidence of leaf notching on ruscus, being as effective as the standard pesticide pyrimiphos-methyl.
