AS REPORTED IN the November issue, the Netherlands is to go ahead with the purchase of the F-35 Lightning H Joint Strike Fighter to replace its F-16 fleet. After 18 years of discussions, the decision taken on September 17 will provide the Royal Netherlands Air Force with a fleet of 37 F-35As, the number having been trimmed down to remain within the EUR4.5-billion special budget set aside for the acquisition. The 37-strong fleet of JSFs will cost EUR270 million a year to operate, this figure being in addition to the basic budget.
