The F-35B, the STOVL version of the Joint Strike Fighter is in trouble. The purchase price and operating costs of all three versions of the JSF, but especially naval versions, are soaring. Such are the realities confronting Leon Panetta, the new US defense chief who surprised everyone by hinting that he may be thinking of canceling the JSF, the most expensive and most politically connected aircraft program in history.
