Relationship between the varietal difference in the content of mineral nutrients in leaves under snow cover and morphological characteristics in broad bean.

Varietal differences in the mineral contents of leaves under snow cover were examined in relation to the morphological characteristics of shoots in 16 varieties of Vicia faba. Snow coverage increased necrotized leaf area and decreased leaf contentsof K, Ca and Mg; these changes were less in snow-tolerant cultivars than in susceptible cultivars. It is suggested that the lower amount of mineral leaching from snow-tolerant cultivars is through morphological characters which avoid leaf wounding.
