Synchronization of ovulation by PMSG-hCG in the prepubertal gilt.

79 prepubertal gilts were injected intramuscularly with 1000 IU PMSG, followed 72 h later with an injection of 3 ml physiological saline solution (PMSG group) or 500 IU HCG (PMSG-HCG group). Three to 10 gilts from each group were laparotomised on day 0, 1, 2, 3, 4 or 5 after saline or HCG injection. In the PMSG group, 0, 60, 83.3 and 100% of gilts had ovulated on days 0 and 1, 2, 3 and 4 and 5 respectively. In the PMSG-HCG group, the values were 0 and 100% on days 0 and 1, and 2-5 respectively. Thenumber of ovulated follicles on day 2 was similar in both groups, but fewer ovulated follicles were detected in the PMSG group than in the PMSG-HCG group on days 3-5.
