Operation serval

French forces were initially committed in the West African nation of Mali on 11 January, where they are supporting the local government's fight against jihadist rebel forces as part of Operation 'Serval'. The French military campaign is conducted under the auspices of United Nations Resolutions 2056 and 2085. While the early phase of the air campaign saw long-range missions launched from mainland France, the air war now seems to have settled down to a low-intensity war of attrition against the rebels that have taken control of northern Mali.
