In many ways, the 109th Airlift Wing has similarities with other Air National Guard transport units - but, uniquely among C-130 outfits, it routinely operates in some of the most extreme conditions known to military aviators. For over 54 years, the National Scientific Foundation has depended on the wing's airmen for the safe delivery of fuel, cargo and research scientists to Antarctica and Greenland.
