UNTIL SEPTEMBER 2012, Marinefliegergeschwader 3 (MFG 3) 'Graf Zeppelin' was the sole flying unit operating from Nordholz. Then it was joined by MFG 5, which departed Kiel on the Baltic, thereby bringing together the entire Marineflieger at a single unified base. On August 18, Nordholz hosted a celebratory open house event to mark the centenary of German Naval Aviation. On hand were the expected special schemes, plus a flying program and international participants. In the spotlight was the German Navy's continued overseas role under the auspices of Operation 'Atalanta'.
