Famously formed in response to the poor air-to-air combat performance by USAF pilots over North Vietnam between 1965 and 1973, 'Red Flag' was created in 1975 to offer US pilots the opportunity to fly realistic simulated combat missions in a safe training environment with measurable results against adversary air and ground threats. Col Richard Suter, a Vietnam combat veteran, became the driving force behind 'Red Flag', which was established at Nellis under the 4440th Tactical Fighter Training Group.
