Water saving strategies under an irrigation system in arid and semi-arid regions

Effectively using water is critical for agricultural production in arid and semi-arid regions. This technical report described the necessity of irrigation, the significance of water resource security, and the various irrigation methods and their efficiency. The following important aspects associated with water saving strategies were discussed: (1) optimization in tank irrigation design, (2) comparison of water use efficiency in different subsurface irrigation systems, (3) production and quality of leafy vegetables under controlled water supply, (4) drip irrigation in combination with mulch, and (5) problems of drip irrigation using water of low quality. The solutions for sustainable water use in agriculture were also presented.
