Pinus merkusii is one of the few tropical pines in the world and its natural distribution just crosses the equator into the southern hemisphere This species is also extensively distributed in Southeast Asia such as Thailand, Burma, Laos Cambodia, Vietnam and The Philippine Island of Luzon and Sumatra Indonesia (Cooling, 1968) In Sumatra, pure natural forests of P. merkusii are observed in Aceh but smaller cluster and mixture with broadleaf trees in Tapanuli and Mount Kerinci (Suseno, 1988). In Indonesia, genetic improvement programs on this species have been established to achieve stem straightness. Seeds as material planting were obtained from mother trees which grew in artificial forest in Java Island. The breeding and planting of second generation from these seeds were conducted (Danarto el a.l, 2000). At present, a seedling seed orchard containing 600 families and 36,000 selective trees in 96 ha was established. This orchard is surrounded by commercial planting of this species. Knowledge aboutmating systems in seedling seed orchard is useful to improve the design and management of P. merkusii seed orchard, which is limited Recently, molecular markers have been successfully used to investigate the mating systems of tree species, especially such as codominant and high polymorphic microsatellite markers Thus, in the present study, we developed microsatellite markers from P. merkusii to investigate genetic diversity and mating systems in the established seedling seed orchard.
