ON SEPTEMBER 23 a surprisingly critical report was published by the Beijing-based Sina Military Network (SMN), addressing the capabilities of the carrier-borne J-15 'Flying Shark', and describing it as nothing more than a 'flopping fish'. What at first sight was an unusual departure from the often over-enthusiastic reports from the mainland media is a good opportunity to critically analyze the J-15. Although the story was soon picked up by several foreign agencies, a closer look at the arguments reveals a different story.
