NATO's E-3A force has once again proven its value, this time over Libya. The success of Operation 'Unified Protector' and the ousting of the Gaddafi regime were significantly aided by the employment of the Sentry. WHEN NATO WAS requested to take over the Libyan no-fly zone mission under Operation 'Unified Protector' (OUP), the NATO E-3As were quickly deployed from Geilenkirchen in Germany to the Forward Operating Base (FOB) at Trapani in Sicily. The Italian island is familiar territory for the NATO E-3A Component, with this FOB being used regularly. In particular, NATO Sentries are based at Trapani for Operation 'Active Endeavour', in order to monitor ships and protect them against piracy and terrorist actions.
