Any conflict in the region can affect the oil industry and lead to increased prices. All Persian Gulf nations understand this fact well, especially in light of their experience of the 'Tanker War' during the Iran-Iraq conflict. Before the Islamic Revolution in Iran led to widespread change in the Middle East, the Shah of Iran realized the role of regional security in ensuring a strong economy. His doctrine led to a bolstering of Iranian armed forces in the Persian Gulf, Iran being supported by the US as an important ally in the Gulf region.
