FLAGGING IN THE LOWLANDS

After premature termination in 2010 due to the eruption of Iceland's Eyjafjallajokull volcano, and cancellation in 2011 due to the rapid escalation of Operation 'Unified Protector' over Libya, the Royal Netherlands Air Force's largest aerial exercise 'Frisian Flag' was held from 16-27 April. WITH NINE participating nations and 64 aircraft operating out of Leeuwarden air base, this year's 'Frisian Flag' was the largest so far. 'Just like any other 'Flag' kind of exercise, the objective of the drill was to plan, execute and debrief large-scale COMAO (composite air operations) packages in realistic scenarios, and in this case with NATO and Partnership for Peace (PfP) nations', Capt Jos (full name withheld), project officer from 323 TACTESS (Tactical Training, Evaluation and Standardisation Squadron) stated. 'All available parking space was used, leaving our other participants, tire 493rd Fighter Squadron, flying F-15Cs out of their home base, RAF Lakenheath, No 5(AC) Squadron Sentinel R1s operating out of RAF Waddington, and an E-3A AWACS out of Geilenkirchen, Germany.'
