Development and characteristics of new silage maize (Zea mays L.) cultivar 'Yumetsuyoshi'.

A new cultivar of silage maize, Yumetsuyoshi, was developed by the National Agricultural Research Center for Kyushu Okinawa Region (formerly Kyushu National Agricultural Research Station) in Japan. It was registered as Nourin Kou No. 51 by the Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries of Japan in October 2001. It is a single-cross hybrid between the dent inbred line Mi44 as the seed parent and the dent inbred line Mi62 as the pollen parent. Yumetsuyoshi is adapted to Kyushu, Shikoku and Chugoku regions. It is a medium-late-maturing cultivar, reaching the silking stage one day earlier than Hatayutaka and G4655. It shows excellent lodging resistance that exceeds that Hatayutaka and G4655. The dry matter yield is comparable to the dry matter yields of Hatayutaka and G4655. The total digestible nutrient yield and ear ratio are moderately higher than those of Hatayutaka and G4655. Yumetsuyoshi is as resistant to southern leaf blight (Bipolaris maydis [Cochliobolus heterostrophus]) as Hatayutaka and G4655. Resistance to common rust [Puccinia sp.] is greater than that of Hatayutaka and G4655. This cultivar is more adaptable to late sowing (in late May) than Hatayutaka and G4655. Sowing in June or later should be avoided because of its susceptibility to southern rust [Puccinia sp.]. Appropriate planting densities range from 650 to 700 plants/100 m2.
