The effect of prostaglandin F_(2#alpha#) (PGF_(2#alpha#)), gonadotrophin releasing hormon (GnRH), estradio(E) or antibiotics on intrauterine environment and reproductive performance of dairy cows following retained placenta was examined. There were no significant differences in the isolation rate of A. pyogenes and the other bacteria between the groups. The mean percentage of neutrophils in groups (PGF_(2#alpha#)) and E were significantly lower than group GnRH (p<0.05). As regards reproductive performance, the number of days from parturition to first insemination, the number of days until conception and the number of artificial inseminations required to achieve conception were smallest in cows given both PGF_(2#alpha#) and E combined, and there was a significant difference from the animals given GnRH (p<0.01) or antibiotics (p<0.05). The results suggest that the administration of PGF_(2#alpha#) and E to cows with retained placenta might improve the intrauterine environment and the reproductive performance, and the effects might be intensified by the combination of PGF_(2#alpha#) and E.
