One case of piroplasmosis of calf in which fetal infection was suspected

In the blood smear specimen of 2 day-old Black Japanese cow that exhibited the symptom of anemia, the parasitism of piroplasmida (Theileria sergenti) was observed in the red blood cell. When the authors made microscopic examinations, the parasitism of piroplasmida (Theileria sergenti) was also observed in the red blood cell of mother cow. Because the tick-borne infection was epidemiologically difficult to be conceivable, the fetal infection was suspected in the present case. The fetal infection of piroplasmida (Theileria sergenti) has been already reported by ONOUE et al. of Hokkaido, and based on the present case, it was considered that the fetal infection is also necessary to be thought about.
