Psychometric Properties of the Social Problem SolvingInventory-Revised Short-Form: Is the Short Form a Validand Reliable Measure for Young Adults?

The purpose of the present study was toexamine the psychometric properties of the SocialProblem-Solving Inventory-Revised Short-Form (SPSI-R:SF), a 25-item self-report measure of real life socialproblem-solving ability. A sample of 219 Australianuniversity students aged 16-25 years participated in thestudy. The reliability of the SPSI-R:SF scales wasadequate to excellent. Evidence was demonstrated forconvergent validity and divergent validity. Confirma-tory factor analysis results were in line with past researchand suggested good model fit. In addition, discriminantfunction analysis revealed that the SPSI-R:SF was ableto significantly discriminate low and high levels ofdepressive symptomatology. Collectively, results sug-gest that the SPSI-R:SF represents a reliable and validinstrument for efficient assessment of social problem-solving ability in young Australian adults. Limitationsand future research are also discussed.
