Stopping Slugs and Snails

Slugs and snails, along with the oyster, squid, and octopus are molluscs. Although most molluscs are aquatic, slugs and snails can be either aquatic, terrestrial or amphibious. Aquatic species carry disease-causing parasites of humans and mammals (Bay et al. 1976; Berg 1973; Kela and Bowen 1995; Zhang et al. 2006). Though most of the approximately 12,000 terrestrial species are not destructive, some are significant pests of worldwide agriculture, and they can be nuisances in the garden (Godan 1983; Flint 2003; Rae et al. 2005). This article is concerned only with terrestrial species that are pests of gardens and field crops.
