Gaseous messengers in the nervous system

摘要

Nitric oxide is the first gaseous messenger whose functions were comprehensively studied in different systems of organism. Recently, new data on the physiological role of other endogenous gases: carbon monoxide and hydrogen sulfide, appeared. The role of gases in gastrointestinal tract and cardiovascular system have been established; however, data on their function and mechanisms of action in nervous system are insufficient.
