Leaf epidermis microrelief in Populus (Salicaceae).

The lower epidermis surface was studied in 8 species of the genus Populus from the subgenera Aegeiros, Populus, Tacamahaca. All the species have the microrelief of the folded type. Its elements have different fold shapes and sizes, and lie in the stomata zone radially from the guard cells. Leaves of P. alba and P. bolleana, forming outside wintering buds, and leaves of aspens have folds in the basic epidermal cell. The folds were found to be appendages of the cell wall, covered with the cuticle. The data were analysed using the computer model. This allowed to demonstrate that the presence of the folds changes the structure and the magnitude of mechanical pressure in the cells surrounding the stomata. It affects the degree of the stomatal pore opening under the changes in the accessory cell turgor.
