Changes in the nitrogen-fixing activity of naturally growing Trifolium pratense, T. montanum, Vicia sepium and Astragalus subpolaris were studied in 1993 on the Kola Peninsula, Russia. Nitrogen fixation depended on the growth stage and the precipitation and temperature during the growing season. Nitrogen fixation was greatest during flowering. The legumes fixed from 5.8 g (Vicia sepium) to 36.8 g of N per 1 m2 (Trifolium pratense) over the growing season.
