Tungsten in the presence of molybdenum stimulates the nitrate reductase activity and growth of the salt-tolerant yeast Rhodotorula glutinis on nitrate supplemented medium. The proteins possessing nitrate reductase activity do not contain tungsten. A possible reason for the stimulation by tungsten is a significant increase in the molybdenum cofactor content in the cells grown on equimolar Mo/W medium
