摘要

The implementation and characteristics of artificially composed left-handed (CRLH) metamaterials in microwave and millimeter-wave regions are discussed. First, the theory of left-handed metamaterials is explained focusing on that for CRLH metamaterials. It is demonstrated that under a special case in which the balanced CRLH condition is satisfied, CRLH metamaterials exhibit unique electromagnetic characteristics such as a smooth transition between the leftand right-handed propagation bands with non-zero group velocity at the Γ-point in the Brillouin zone, which is expected to be important in practical CRLH metamaterial design. Then, two 2D implementations of the CRLH metamaterials designed in microwave regions are presented, and numerically and experimentally confirmed wave-propagation characteristics of the CRLH metamaterials are given.
