摘要

The authors are to be congratulated for what I think is a landmark manuscript that merits close attention by everyone involved in the care of surgical patients including not only physicians, but also by the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Sertices (CMS) and insurance companies as the latter two groups have an increasingly important say in what physicians and other healthcare providers are allowed to do [1]. The American College of Surgeons (ACS) and the American Medical Association (AMA) should weigh in on this very important study to assist surgeons and all physicians in our efforts to improve the post-discharge care of our patients. Individual physicians or groups of physicians cannot by themselves bring about the necessary changes in our post-discharge care processes to decrease the alarmingly high number of early post-discharge deaths following surgical procedisres.
