Clinical supervision for nurses working in mental health settings in Queensland, Australia: a randomised controlled trial in progress and emergent challenges

Professor White and Dr. Winstanley report a randomised controlled trial of clinical supervision in mental health settings. This study, when completed, will have a significant impact on our understanding of clinical supervision. In this paper, they describe the background to the study, its initial and middle phases and a number of 'emerging challenges'. It is to be hoped that this study will be more widely disseminated dian one of its predecessors, the Clinical Supervision Evaluation Study (CSEP) (Butter-worth, et al., 1997). The CSEP was a multicentre study of clinical supervision, conducted in 21 separate sites in England and Scotland. The major shortcoming of the study was the lack of a standardised measure of clinical supervision itself. This was subsequently rectified by the study's statistician, Julie Jeacock (now Winstanley), who went onto develop the Manchester Clinical Supervision Scale. This is one of the key measures in the present trial.
