An investigation into fertility problems in a dairy herd possibly associated with Histophilus somni (previously Haemophilus somnus)

An outbreak of endometritis and impaired fertility in cows in a farm in the UK occurred during July-November 2005. One vaginal swab and one preputial wash from the stock bull were positive for Histophilus somni. Investigations conducted in December 2005 showed 9/33 (27%) cows with endometritis and 10 cows (30%) with granular vaginitis. H. somni was isolated from 5/33 (15%) vaginal swabs. Culling of the infected bull resolved the endometritis and granular vaginitis but infertility remained a problem. It is likely that H. somni is implicated in the fertility problems in this herd.
