The Society has invited me to discuss the moral and ethical arguments which arise from the manipulation of animal breeding programmes. This theme relates to the lectures of previous contributors who addressed major issues and opportunities that confront today's agricultural community - how to match the great successes of the past in a sustainable way, how to shape the social structure of European agriculture in transition, and how agriculture can increase its contribution to wealth creation and the quality of life.
