The addition of carbon black was studied for the purpose of improving the spalling resistance of low carbon MgO-C bricks, resulting in the following findings: (1) It was found that the MOE can be reduced by distributing fine carbon black in the matrix of low carbon MgO-C bricks. (2) The suppression of sintering between aggregate grains and the formation of fine spaces in the structure were considered to be the main reasons for reduction of MOE. (3) It is expected that reducing the MOE of low carbon MgO-C bricks will result in improved spalling resistance.
