The present state of the techniques used for the analysis of carbon-containing refractories was outlined. Since carbon-containing refractories are produced in a wide variety, their characterization requires more than simple adoption of conventional methods. Likewise, techniques for their analysis must be well organized as a fundamental technology so that a variety of carbon-containing refractories available in the market can be analyzed in a standardized fashion. At last, the author would like to express his gratitude to all the members of the Carbon Analysis Research Group of the TARJ and to Horiba, Ltd., Japan Analyst, and Shimazu Corporation, manufacturers of carbon analyzers, for their cooperation.
