Al_2O_3-C materials are commonly used for sliding nozzle plates (SN plate, hereafter) which serve to control the flow of molten steel from steel ladles (LD, hereafter) and tundishes (TD, hereafter). Many studies have been done with the purpose of improving thermal spalling resistance because thermal shock resistance is essential for SN plate materials for LD of overlap duty and for TD of hot rotation use1'2). It is known to be effective to use materials with a low thermal expansion rate and a low modulus of elasticity3'. This study involved an investigation of the effect of substituting the same volume of aggregate as the typical Al_2O_3-C materials, with aggregate having different thermal expansion characteristics, on the thermal shock resistance.
