Property and Performance Evaluation of Pitch and Resin Bonded Dolomite Bricks for Steel Ladles

Pitch bonded dolomite refractories are extensively used in the barrel region of secondary steelmaking ladles for Si-killed steels because of its compatibility with the calcium-silicate slag and other techno-economic reasons. In the secondary steelmaking environment, thermo-mechanical properties of the dolomite bricks greatly govern its performance. Hydration of the brick was a major concern during application due to the inherent limitations of pitch bonded dolomite bricks. In the present study, resin bonded dolomite refractory with graphite addition has been explored as an alternative. Comparative evaluation of physical and thermal properties suggested that use of resin binder and graphite addition enhanced the hot strength, resistance to hydration and slag corrosion and reduction in total porosity. Investigation of after service bricks and condition of the metal zone refractory after plant trial also revealed that the resin bonded dolomite has a higher potential to achieve higher campaign life in terms of nos of heats, compared to pitch bonded dolomite bricks.
