Indian Refractories scenario against global back drop

In the recent past, for nearly a century since establishment of the first steel plant in Jamshedpur, Indian steel industry was mostly in a regulated sector. The situation changed when during 1990-91 the country opened its economy and steel was one industry which was first to be decontrolled . There was optimism related to demand for steel in the country but this optimism did not turn into reality due to various reasons like recession in South East Asia economy, oversupply of most kind of steel and also a slowdown in growth of consumer durables and capital goods. The situation ultimately changed by the end of 2002 and for the last five years the growth in Indian steel industry has been satisfactory. Consequent to that Indian refractory industry which supplies 75 to 80 per cent of their products to steel industries are also on a growth path.
