Indian Steel Industry: Some issues and some views

The production of crude steel, finished steel and consumption of finished steel in India during the last five years is shown in Table-1 below. These are the revised data published by the Joint Plant Committee (JPC) in their web site. (in'OOOT) Above revised data was arrived at by JPC after taking into account under reporting in case of long products and double counting in case of flat products. India is currently the 5~(th) largest steel producer in the world. However, per capita consumption at about 40kg is abysmally low. China, the largest producer in the world, produced 489mmt of crude steel in 2007 and per capita consumption of finished steel is around 300kg. Average finished steel consumption in the world in 2005 was 173kg.
