For many years, the aluminum industry has been the main user in Russia for the low-sulfur coke provided by electrode pitch coke (EPC) and slow oil coke (SOC). The Russian market for coke is one of acute shortage. Consequently, the user quality of pitch coke has remained unaltered and not been developed. Up until now, only those quality parameters have been standardized that relate to the quality of the initial coal (ash, total sulfur content) and guarantee coking technology (volatile yield, grain-size composition, and resistivity) [1]. With the cessation of production for special oil pyrolysis coke (SOPC), the production of all grades of constructional graphite has remained without a raw material. An intensive search has been made for an alternative under laboratory and industrial conditions and has shown that one can use standard pitch coke for making various carbon constructional materials, in particular graphites of grades VPG, PROG-2400, GMZ, PG-50, and ARV [2, 3].
