A New Way of Coke Quenching to Improve the Quality of Coke at-Tata Steel

Effects of different methods of quenching on metallurgical coke properties in laboratory and coke plant conditions were studied. The various technological measures, like, coal blend preparation, carboniza?tion, etc. are not enough for upgrading the coke quality. Therefore, quenching of coke is an important area for improving the coke quality. In this investigation, equipment was fabricated to cool coke in different con?ditions and fissures were measured in Quantimet 550 image analyzer using Leica software. The coal blends were carbonized in 7-kg carbolite oven and red hot cokes were cooled in six different conditions. Based on laboratory results, different methods of quenching were carried out in Coke Plant, battery no. 8 of Tata Steel. Results show that 15 second of top quenching, 15 seconds of side quenching, 25 seconds of quenching gap and 40 seconds of second top quenching will improve coke quality in terms of M40, CSR, plus 30 mm size of coke, micro-fissures and moisture.
