Extraction of Diatomic Phenols from the Thermal-Processing Products of Coal: A Review

A literature review focuses on the complex formation of diatomic phenols, their solubility in organic solvents, and their extraction from the thermal-processing products of coal by extraction, crystallization and rectification. We know that pyrocatechol and resorcinol are mainly produced from water layers above and below tar in the thermal processing of coal [1,2]. From the water layers under the tar, 2.4-3 kg of pyrocatechol (recalcu-lated for 1 t of processed coal) may be obtained. More pyrocatechol is present in the tar, predominantly in the intermediate oil and in the tar deposited in the electro-filters. Small quantities of diatomic phenols are formed in the semicoking of coal (0.4-0.62 kg/t of coal).
