The influence of heat treatment on the structure and properties of coal is usually considered both in terms of fundamental concepts regarding coal structure [1] and in the context of practical applications - in particular, in studying the thermal preparation of coal mixtures for more effective coking [2], Among the methods used in such studies (for example, infrared spectroscopy, nuclear magnetic resonance, electron spin resonance), X-ray structural analysis with various approaches to the interpretation of the diffraction spectra of coal and its heat-treatment products is widely employed. Attention generally focuses here on the X-ray diffraction parameters characterizing the most ordered carbon structures and their variation at high temperature (usually 900-1000 deg C and above) [3, 4].
