Successful retrieval from right ventricular wall of an embolized bard meridian filter fragment

In recent years, earlier generations of Bard Peripheral Vascular5 (Tempe, Arizona) retrievable inferior vena cava (IVC) filters have been documented to fracture and embolize, with serious complications (1,2). Filter designs have since been modified, including the addition of an electropolished finish and caudal anchors to reduce migration. Here we describe a case of an implanted Bard Meridian filter with spontaneous fracture of two of its limbs before attempted retrieval. One limb was found embedded within the patient's right ventricle, requiring meticulous removal.
