Dear Editor, Cholesteatoma is a locally destructive three-dimensional epidermal structure. Complications can include erosion of the ossicular chain with resulting conductive hearing loss. Further extension and concomitant infection may lead to facial nerve paralysis, vestibular involvement with vertigo and intracranial abscess resulting in death. Whilst some patients may be managed with regular aural toilet, treatment will usually require surgical removal of the disease, which requires exploration of the temporal bone.
