Russia's coke furnaces are in crisis: the mean age of the coke batteries is 22 years (amortizational age 18 years); because the rate of battery reconstruction and construction is extremely low, coke production may be sharply reduced within the next five years - by ~7-10 million ton/yr. A new approach to maintaining coke batteries and extending their working life to 40-45 years has been adopted in Russia and elsewhere: hot repair of individual heating walls to different depths (including complete relining) using ordinary Dinas brick; this approach minimizes the loss of production and does not damage adjacent walls.
