Diabetes mellitus (DM) is a major risk factor for atherosclerosis and arterial thrombosis and patients with DM are al an increased risk of thrombotic events after percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI) . Disturbance of platelet function in diabetic patients is complex . Besides thromboxane A2 release and platelet turnover , platelet activation and adenosine diphosphate (ADP), as well as collagen-induced aggregation [7-9], were found to be increased in diabetic patients. ADP receptor blockade by thienopyridines like ticlopidine and clopidogrel, in addition to inhibition of cyclooxygenase by aspirin, is an extremely effective pharmacological tool to prevent thrombosis in native arteries and arteries treated with vascular prostheses [10].
