STATUS OF COAL SUPPLIES FOR COKEMAKING

In previous reports [1-5] we examined the reasons for the declining quality of coke in Russia and recommended ways to turn around this situation. We showed that for maximum coke strength, the coal blend should have the following characteristics: V~d 25 percent, y >= 15 mm, R_o > 1.15, and Vt > 60 percent. This optimum blend should consist of three groups of coals: caking GZh + Zh, coking K + KO + OS, and lean KS + KSN. In addition, the reflectogram of this coal blend should have no breaks in continuity. Blend quality depends on the origin of the coals and the properties of the individual blend components. For example, the optimum blend of Kuznetsk Basin coals is, percent: 40-45 GZh + Zh, 35-40 K + KO + OS, and 15-20 KS + KSN. The main reason for declining coke strength is that blends do not have the optimum amount of coking coals and thus do not have the optimum values for V~d and R_o. The shortage of coking coals in blends is 16-17 percent. The only solution to the quality problem is to eliminate the shortage of coking coals. There are two ways to do this: developing more mining and cleaning capacity in Russia or importing more coal.
