The Altai-Coke Joint-Stock Company is the first to use the biochemically treated water produced from wastewaters for replenishing the recirculating cooling water in enclosed heat treatment equipment. Therefore, the environmental conditions at the Altai By-Product Coke Oven Plant are determined by the level to which the treated water is clean. According to the project design, the system of biochemical treatment of phenol wastewater at the plant has a two-stage flow diagram in which the wastewaters are cleaned from phenols at the first stage and from thiocyanates at the second stage. To use the main volume of phenol waste effluents in the recycling water system of the plant water supply, the treatment flow diagram was designed so that the wastewater with low salt content and the wastewater with high salt content (from gas-collecting devices), which, though unstable, can be used for coke quenching after being diluted with process water, should be treated separately.
