摘要

Bowman-Birk inhibitors (BBI) are low mol. wt. plant proteins which have been shown to have anticarcinogencity in vivo and in vitro, including protective effects against colorectal cancer. As BBI need to survive in the gastrointestinal tract in order to provide chemopreventive effects in the colon, this study examined survival of BBI proteins from chick peas in a swine model of human digestion. Significant amounts of BBI from chick pea-based diets were able to reach the terminal ileum of cannulated swine in active form, thus demonstrating that dietary BBI may have potential for use as colorectal chemopreventive agents in humans.
