Big Data Adoption in the Health Care Domain: Challenges and Perspectives

Due to recent technological advancements, health care organizations now have access to large volumes of clinical, financial, and consumer information from which to identify patterns and trends. As with other industries, health care is grappling with the best ways to decipher and leverage these big data sets, with the ultimate goals to enhance patient care and improve population health. The sheer magnitude of the number of available data is both a boon and a hurdle. When interpreting data, more information is not always better, unless an organization assesses these data to discern what are noise and what are not. This paper explores a number of challenges and barriers to big data analytics and use.
