Traditional techniques in astronomical speckle imaging require simultaneous measurements on a reference star to estimate the object Fourier modulus. Although the phase recovery problem has been successfully solved with the use of the bispectrum, the unwanted requirement of measurements on a reference is still present. Two minimization approaches to recover the desired diffraction-limited object from the bispectral phase alone are suggested. # 1998 Optical Society of America [S0740-3232(98)01907-3] OCIS code: 100.0100.
